Smart Backup to External Hard Drive Software?

Hi guys,

If this question is super obvious, I'm sorry, I'm coming from the Mac world, so I'm not very familiar with all of the tools available for Windows.

Essentially, I'm looking for a way to keep a few folders on my computer synced to my external hard drive. I don't always leave my external plugged in though, (traveling, etc...) so I would like a tool where I can manually hit a sync button after listing which specific target / source folders I want synced.

Basically, I want some software that auto-detects which files don't already exist, or have been updated, and copies only those. So essentially something that is only one step above manually copying, etc... Then I can use a batch file possibly to automate the process, once every week or so.

Since this seems about as basic as it gets, I would assume there are free tools, but I suppose I would pay if one stood above the rest. Any tips?

I'm sure there is software that is fully automated, but I don't like the idea of having a process / service in the background constantly running, continually looking for new files, etc...
