I bought one of the Smart and Friendly drives during the Best Buy close out chaos last year. I read in someof the posts here that it was rebadged Sanyo drive and I have updated the rom to the version that was out (1.21).

There is now a new 1.27 version available and I was wondering if anyone has tried this yet?

It can be found here:

You are right, it is a rebadged Sanyo CRD-RW2. Upgraded the firmware from 1.21 to 1.27 and CloneCD 2813 now works. Still looking for cheap 90 min media to test it.

I've tried it but the firmware doesn't allow it to be flashed w/Sanyo's firmware. I tried it using firmware flasher from both companies even though it was regardlessly made by the same company. I think the last one for S&F was 1.17 or so wasn't it?

You personally had a successful flash updated? If so which flasher did you use and where did you download it from?

Last I've heard was that S&F 12x4x32 was actually Sanyo BP2 according to CD world or such. LMK if anyone had personally had such luck (not " I know a friend of a friend whose girl friends' brother's uncle's co-worker who heard..." bs)

damien, as mentioned by io331 (follow the link), I used The FlashTool program.

Sanyo CRD-RW2 software downloads

Download the Flashtool243e.exe file and extract to a folder. also download the Rw2_127w.exe (this is the firmware) and extract to same folder. Run the WinFlash243e.exe file.

Follow the instructions as shown in this link.

WinFlash

Don't forget reboot after the flash is done, the screen should show that flash is completed.

Note:

The Sanyo CRD-BP2 (2 mB buffer) has "Burn-Proof technology" - The S&F 12432 (Sanyo CRD-RW2; 4 mB buffer) does not have it.
I would love to get my hands on a BP2 and make a PC board comparison. I opened my drive and saw that it has the LC898023K chip.

The last one I've tried was the 1.16 flashed to 1.17 but when I tried the 1.21 it would just say that the firmware revision was wrong or no Sanyo drive. (something like that) It just wouldn't flash w/anything other than S&F but then again like I've said last I've heard was that it was remarked BP2. I guess I'll tried the newer firmware flasher and the one for RW2 instead.

Yeah, I know how to use the flasher but I guess it would help if you use the proper bios file to begin with. As for the "Burn Proof" thing I really couldn't care less, I was just hoping for more burning software supports and continueing future "support" (even if it is by indirectly) than anything else. I mean w/4mb buffer and being scsi, I don't think I'll worry too much about buffer under runs. :p

Check this site for RW2 and BP2

BP2 - shows that it has 2 MB buffer and 2.17, 2.21 and 2.27 firmware.

RW2 - shows that it has 4 MB buffer
and 1.17, 1.21 and 1.27 firmware. S&F CD Rocket Mach 12 has the same firmware versions and buffer size.

BTW, I also tried to flash w/ the BP2 firmwares but off course it did not work. The Flash looks for the Bios ID String of the drive to confirm that it is the correct drive.

I'm thinking of applying the famous - Imation/Plextor or Iomega/Plexor BIOS ID String hack to this drive and maybe try the BP2 firmware. Who know what might happen.

Hope this helps you. I'm happy with the results, finally can use CloneCD (at least 2.813 version to the present)

I'm not aware of any hack, yet. Will have to look at the Iomega/Plextor files and maybe hex edit it. Need the exact BIOS ID String for the Sanyo CRD-BP2. Will have to do a S&F to Sanyo and Sanyo to S&F renaming program. Haven't used the drive ever since I got the Iomega 121032 from CompUSA.
