small vertical lines on boot

hello,
i had a xfx gfx5900 xt for a about a year. Couple of months ago, when i play, there's some kind of artifact on the card, but i thought it was because of connection between agp slot and my gfx is loosen, because if i push it a bit further to the side, either left or right, the artifact dissapeared, then several minutes again, it might show up again, might not. Just recently, on boot my video card showed several small vertical white lines on boot, especially when there's a color text / ascii symbol (like the epa logo) on the screen, if i try to push it to the side, another more vertical lines showed up.

If there's no color, then it's fine. When i get to windows xp loading screen with the horizontal blue bar moving from left to right, i saw more lines on the logo. Then a bsod would show up. If i try to change the position of the gfx, i.e pushing it to left (as far as the agp slot and the vga is not loosing connection) then screws it, sometime it will let me pass to windows, but when i run any 3d programs then there's artifact on the screen. Also mouse cursor seems to suffer some artifact as well in 2d mode. From this point on, if i let it on for several minutes, then my other 2d (for example wallpaper, start menu) would also show problems, something like patterns of checkboard, then flickers every 2 seconds until i turn it off, or until it locked up. I've tried an old vga card, a geforce 2 mx 400 on my computer, it runs fine.

Also tried the fx5900 on another computer, it also shows similar symptoms, altough the lines on the bootup now shows purple instead of white. It will lockup on windows xp os selection. As far as i can remember, i've done nothing that has to do with my computer that will caused this thing. No new hardware install, no new driver nadda... I already check the heatsink for the core and the memory, and they still feel sticky, no signs of loosing contacts.

my computer :
xfx geforce 5900 xt, default core 400/700, only overclock when i first bought it for 3dmark, after that never oc, in fact it's been running default core/clock for the past 9 months. No bios flashing either. I also have a 3000 rpm 12 cm fan above it blowing to the vga card.

axp 2400+
shuttle ak35gtr via kt266a
generic pc2100 256x2
enermax 465W power supply.

Does the symptoms sounds like bad memory failure ? Or can it be caused by another factor, such as a capacitor / resistor on my card goes bad ? I really don't want to upgrade video card, as the rest of my system right now is not very high end, so buying a 6600 / 6800 / x800 is not really an option for this old system, infact, buying anything for this old system is not very reasonable. Any suggestions / diagnostic programs that i could try ?

thanks, gryfon

These are textbook symptoms of a video card that has gradually been damaged by overheating or too much overclocking (whether GPU or RAM I don't know). In fact, I just replaced a Radeon 9700 Pro with the exact same symptoms a little over a week ago in a Dimension 4500.

PSU: good.
Mobo: should be good. The board just a bit later than that (AK35GT2) has been my most solid mobo ever.
RAM: would not cause video artifacts.

If it is under warranty, try to get a RMA. Whether it is or not, I would avoid XFX, PNY, and Apollo, if not some others. The folks around here don't recommend BFG, Gainward, Asus and Leadtek for no reason.

If you can't get a RMA, get a 9600 Pro or XT (or check FS/T!) to hold you over until you can do a major upgrade.
