3-2-2004 Killington Vermont Resident Vote to Join New Hampshire

The main source of discontent is Vermont's new system of financing education, adopted in 1997 on orders from the state Supreme Court. It dramatically increased property taxes in wealthy communities like Killington.

Secession activists say Killington's restaurants, inns and other businesses send $20 million a year to Montpelier in sales, room and meal taxes, while the state returns just $1 million in municipal and education aid to the town of roughly 1,000 residents.

"The state is treating us like a cash-cow," said David Lewis, town manager.

1 million in state aid isn't bad for a town of 1,000. It isn't like the state is milking the residents they are milking the tourist that going skiing at kilington for I think 75 dollars a day.

If it was adjacent to New Hampshire it might have a shot. Since it is somewhat inland and not bordering it wouldn't make much sense.

I don't see any evidence that Killington is a City. If not they need to become a City to be able to keep the more of the money they collect to themselves then.

That would get them more than 1 million out of the 10 million pie.

Ooops, thanks, brain thinking one thing and hands typed another, wild.

You probably did this in reverse on your resume. May want to double check that...probably won't get many calls quoting your ability to secede.

Yea, that might be a problem if there was any jobs.

Since I got my last job through dice.com, and my current job through a recruiter, I beg to differ.

The first 2 are technisource, contract jobs. Technisource is not fluff or EEOE. T through a brief scan on the first page I don't see a single "work from home" scam. But whatever, keep telling yourself that there are no jobs. I couldn't possibly be the applicant...

You mean if you were qualified for any jobs. Did you ever think that the problem is you and your negative attitude?

Take the word 'Raped' out of the title. It's a sad day when you can't find an alternative to an adjective that means 'sexual attack and abuse'.

I've explained what it means in laymans terms so you can understand. You obviously didn't when you wrote it, otherwise you wouldn't have used it in the first place.

If these folks are serious they need to go back and read the constitution, and then they need to be canned for being stupid.

Or, other people may take a history lesson-

Town officials noted there is historical precedent here, as Killington was originally chartered in 1761 as the Province of New Hampshire.

Link.

Another quote from that article that is telling about Vermont-

But officials in Montpelier don't seem worried about having to redraw any maps. Secretary of State Deborah Markowitz cited some imposing obstacles to Killington's quest, beginning with the legal relation between the state and its towns.

"This is symbolic, clearly," she said. "Absent an armed insurrection type of thing, there isn't anything a town can do to secede. A town is a construction of the state and exists at the pleasure of the Legislature."

Mind you that Killington the "construction of the state that exists at the pleasure of the Legislature" predates the state of Vermont and their Legislature by 30 years.

As a province of the State of New Hampshire they would be bound by the New Hampshire constitution which is written to give the overwhelming majority of power to the Town/City and not to the State. I believe given the historical backing that they have for the claim not only should they be handed to New Hampshire as soon as the paper work is filled out, but furthermore the State of Vermont is liable to the State of New Hampshire for any and all surplus revenue they have collected from the town in the last 213 years so it may be distributed fairly(ie- the overwhelming majority of it returned to the town where it was stolen from in the first place).
