The other day, we were discussing small tripods, and the subject of the Gorillapod came up.

Yeah - it is one little brute! It arrived today from B&H and I put it to the test. I loaded up the EOS 5d with the biggest lens in the arsenal - the EF 70-200mm f/2.8. It is big and heavy.

The instructions said to use any tilt/pan head, and I had a small sturdy one from film days of yore. It worked very well.

One of the Gorilla's key features is the ability to grap onto just about anything. Here is is glommed on to the back of my TV watching chair.

How stable is it when it is latched onto something? I would imagine it's dependent on the object you attach it to as well, but how does the gorilla pod hold up when attached to something relatively stationary (like a railing)?

Yeah, they're beasts! I have pretty much the whole collection. I use them for everything - dSLR, P&S, Strobes, Pocket Camcorder, Handheld Camcorder, Microphones, you name it!

Depends on what you connect it to. Basically the ball-links on the arms are rubberized, so they provide an anti-skid surface. Of course, if the railing or whatever is too big to wrap it around, you won't get as good of a grip. I carry a remote with my dSLR just in case I don't have a grip area strong enough to hold the camera without me jiggling it when taking pictures (same with my camcorder, I just use a remote half the time). It does a really good job though, and also doubles as a mini tripod that is highly adjustable.

Echo what Kaido said. When shooting in such "prehensile" modes, a remote is the way to go. I use a 30 foot cable and the Canon remote. Someday I'll go wireless. :)

Do they make a smaller version? I'd like one to fit a SD990IS without being too big if possible.

Yes they do. There are several sizes and colors.

Just get a knockoff remote on eBay (if your camera supports remotes). The remote I got for my Nikon d70s dSLR was like $3 shipped or something lol (and it works great!).

Yup, all kinds of sizes & weights supported. I recently picked up the Gorillapod Focus (the big metal one) when Joby was having a sale a month or two ago and it's great - I can mount my 3D Head coupled to my Fluid Head along with my camcorder and on-cam mic and it's rock solid, yay!

Nice. I've always wondered if it could support a 70-200. I might have to look into one of these.

I've never given these a try, but might now.

The primary use would be for macro use - anyone have one and can vouch for a 30D+100mm or similar? The 100 has no collar, so it's super front-heavy.

...And which size did you get, corkyg? Is that the SLR version?

Yes, it is the SLR version.

I have tried it with the 5D and the 24-105 L lens. It is pretty heavy - also a 90mm Tamron 1:1 macro lens. It works.
