Funny thing is I have those exact parts.

Unfortunately I could only find the micro USB to USB adapter from a Chinese seller on eBay. It took 5 or 6 weeks to arrive. And it didn't even work (only cost a $1 so I didn't complain).

I may look again for another micro USB to USB adapter that is tiny like that (currently have a cable that's pretty big by comparison). But they aren't easy to find and usually take forever to arrive.

I would like to see a case similar to this, http://www.mophie.com/mophie-juice-pack-air-iPhone-4-4S-battery-case-p/1145_jpa-ip4-blk.htm, but instead of battery it has a micro sd card slot.

I would consider using the OP's solution for something like an long trip where I want to store a number of movies, but it seems fragile for everyday use.
