Small, Simple, Clean Linux to learn on, any suggestions?

Hi Y'all,

I'm installing linux on my Hp Omnibook 800. I have already installed RH7 on it twice, but each time iy appears that the system is overloaded. I installed KDE and Gnome both times. I would like to install an operating system that I can use to learn the Linux language WITHOUT all the fancy, want-to-be windows, stuff. What suggestions does everyone have for a linux WITH a GUI, but with very little more? One requirement is that I need to install via PCMCIA Nic, my HD is only 1.4GB with 100MB dedicated to a DOS setup. Thanks in advance.
As Always,

Red hat 7 but customize it - dont put on anything but what you want. Or try RH6.2. Slackware's lets you get pretty small too.

Yes, I would recommend Slackware. For learning, I'd probably say RedHat or Mandrake. Mandrake is a fairly big install, however.

Hi Y'all,
Thanks for the advice. I was wondering what I can remove from RH7. If I don't install Gnome, KDE or games, I still end up with a ~700mb operating system. This is with the GUI Standard install. From what I've read, it doesn't seem like I need this much. I just want a simple GUI and a stable, compiled kernel. Is Slackware my only option for a streamline install? I would like to learn Linux/Unix, since you gurus are starting to steal business from MCSEs, but I don't need anything to fancy. Thanks again.

Debian is a nice and small basic install. I tend to use it on servers but have used it on several laptops. On one firewall box I have ~70mb install that works nicely for that.

SuSe Linux. I managed to install SuSe 6.3 on a 460 MB HD, with the whole installation (including GUI) taking up only about 30-40 MB. This was using YAST 1.0. YAST 2.0 blows.

Thanks for the ideas. I have RH downloaded, but I can't figure out which files I need to download for Suse. Anyone want to tell me? As for Debian, I haven't tried it yet, but can it be installed over a PCMCIA NIC? I have a 3Com 3c589c NIC which works great for installing RH. I will download Debian and, if anyone can tell me the directories I need for Suse, I'll give it a try as well. I would like to know how to install any Linux program with less than 100mb, so if RH is possible, just tell me how. Thank you all, Anandtech has been my savior more than once.
As Always,
D
