Small PSU in HP desktops.

I just serviced a couple of HP/Compaq desktops computers. Installed some RAM and perform some cleaning. I was really surprised to see that the HP desktop, while not exactly modern (P3 600MHz, 512MB of RAM) had a very small PSU, about half the size standard ATX units, with a max output of.... 90 watts!!. The 12v rail maxed out at an astonishing 1.5 amps.

This little PSU is powering a 600MHz PIII, 512MB of RAM, two hard drives, a zip drive, an optical drive and a couple of PCI cards.

The 2nd desktop, a Compaq-branded one had a slightly bigger PSU, rated at 200 watts max load, with 5 amps on the 12v rail. This computer is a bit better, with a 1.8GHz P4 (Willamete I think), 256MB of DDR RAM, a 40GB Seagate hdd, an optical drive, a floppy and a 92mm exhaust fan.

The HP/Compaq systems we made when I was with them had 200 Watt power supplies running fully loaded 3.06ghz P4 systems. Some systems had DDR, some had Rdram. A lot of the smaller SFF systems had 90watt PS's and they ran fine.

I have replaced several of the Bestec psus in HPs recently. The smaller ones do seem to last longer than the full sized ones though. I usually only see the small ones on rigs with 1 hd, 1 optical drive, and built-in video. Have seen several of the small ones in Emachines boxes too.

600MHz P3, 34GB HDD, 384MB RAM, TNT2 Ultra made by Dell with a 200W PSU, 12v @ 6A
Dell are clearly better 😛

Makes one wonder what the hell we need 500+ watts PSUs. Is it because modern graphics cards?

Its called egos and epenises. Same principle of people buying high end video cards on machines that only surf the web and look at porn. I ran my system for over 4 years on a 300watt generic PS with no problems and my server runs on a 440watt RaidMax PS running 5 HD's, Dual Processors, 2 optical drives and numerous fans. Its been tested yearly and runs perfect every time.

Your talking about apples and oranges here. He was talking about simple gaming machines and your listing the parts to a high end workstation, if not server.
