i have a slight problem with my brand new graphics card i got today, i just popped in my gainward card into my shuttle ss51g and started to install the drivers, everyhting seemed to be working great.

i ran 3dmark2k1 and got a score of about 8800, i would prefer more but this is good for me. and i also played UT and got something rediculous like 200FPS.

now the first problem is that i tried to connect to a server in gamespy so i could play counterstrike and when it got to the WON authentication process it took ages and 9 times out of ten it couldn't connect to the server.

i dont believe this is something to do with my modem cause when i am surfing the net or downloading stuff off winMX it is fine, also after i have the problem connecting to the server i usually have to reconnect to use the net, but this time i didn't.

so i tried to change the drivers, i cant remember which i tried, i think i got the ones from the gainward site, and i also used the 30.82's or something, just to see if it made a difference.

what it did do was not fix my problem but it also decide not to let me use any directX8 games and wont run 3dmark anymore and tells me that:

'3DMark2001 requires a DirectX8 compatible 3D accelerator, we recommend that you upgrade your computer or test your PC with an older version of 3DMark'

now directX 8.1 is installed on my comp along with the geforce 4 so i am guessing it can handle everything i throw at it pretty well.

i tired to install max payne and got a similar message about my card not being a directX8 compatible card, which is crazy because i have run 3dMark2k1 already with the same setup.

i didn't un-install my drivers before i updated them, what steps can i take to get some drivers working and all games playable and 3DMark2k1 working again?

i really cant format cause i cant backup my personal files and i really dont wanna have to sacrafice them because i dont know how to get some working drivers.

on another note when i installed the gainward drivers that came with the card it told me that the drivers had not been 'digitally signed' with microsoft and they highly recommend i stop the installation

any help would be greatly appreciated as i need to play CS!

Save files which you need, format your hardrive where is Windows XP installed, and then install it again on clean disk, install also via4in1 drivers 4.41 or later and whql latest nvidia, all will be working like wind, so fluently and easy ;-) , Windows sometimes do really cool problems, this helps you for 100% sure, always delete and install fresh copy of windows is there is monster problem, no way to fix it, microsoft know that is that bad, we know that is that bad, but no way to escape in PC platform, lucky for me now I have all working, after long time, with GF4Ti I haven`t problem no more with my system as it was with Voodoo3(pure old board, I have it for 3 years ;-) )

Don't worry about it not being digitally signed...i get that for most of my drivers i install. Did you try uninstalling the drivers and then going into your registry and removing it completely...like do a search for nvidia or something. There should be websites that tell you how to completely remove video card drivers. You should do that as well for your old video card. I don't see how a video card can cause a connection problem but then again i could be wrong.

hmm i guess i could search for all dll's etc in the registry, i really dont want to format but it looks like that is the only way.

something must have changed when i changed the drivers.

goddamn, i just installed the 40.41 drivers and played a little UT, with all the eye candy on, FSAA on 4XS and AF on full with 16 bots running i got 130-140 frames average...........wow!

well i did format and everything is back up again, using 40.41 drivers, directX 8.1 works fine and all my games are running great, including max payne.

got a nice 9003 points in 3Dmark2k1, not bad at all, but i just want 10,000!!!

anyway thanks for the help either way
