Who the hell consumes that much Tylenol?

An ex-gf's time of the month is apparently ridiculously painful. She goes nuts on the NSAIDs (4x dose) then, just as an example. Not saying I agree with it, but that's how it is.

I avoid them unless I absolutely have to for muscular pain. Last time I think I took any was after a day-long mountain hike with most of my body feeling like one giant knot. Never exceeded dosage, too much pharma and medical knowledge in the family to go for that.

Misread title, at first, as:

  :$

I don't usually take Tylenol, but I had a dental issue recently. Still have the 500mg tabs, and I may have taken as much as 10 grams...over the course of a week. No more than 1500mg/day.

For headaches I do take ibuprofen.

This is why I try to avoid products with acetominophen in them. For example Mucinex has a non-acetominophen version (basically just a decongestant plus dextromethorphan) that I take when my sinuses get too plugged. It seems like manufacturers just love to put acetominophen in almost all of the over the counter cold remedies.

I really dislike these drug concoctions. When they mix all these things into one you end up taking medications you don't necessarily need for your particular symptoms.

Many narcotic pain killers have acetaminophen in them. People who abuse those drugs by taking more than they are supposed to at once, or more doses than prescribed, often are unknowingly taking way too much acetaminophen.

tylenol is a dangerous drug...some have have major complications at one dose. It would never pass in today's laws.

You don't understand for the same reason I wouldn't expect a baby to understand physics: it's far beyond its underdeveloped mind.

Because we are all different with different tolerances. Why must this be explained to you?

If you read past the surface, I'm making a jab at our "solve everything with drugs" culture that leads to the OP's article's results.

Oooo, so clever, a closeted insult thrown on an internet forum. What a smart dude on an anonymous internet forum.

I'm sorry if you thought it was closeted. I meant it to be blatant and obvious.

Perhaps if you didn't troll by spewing inane and ignorant garbage on an anonymous internet forum you wouldn't draw the ire of others.

Me trolling? Did you bother reading your own response and look at the tone?

My original comment was just a rhetorical question made in 20 seconds while neffing.

If I hit a nerve, whatever. Good luck!

There is no way I will suffer through a migraine without some sort of narcotic pain relief. Why should I have too?

Hate to break it to you but narcotic pain meds tend to cause rebound headaches when used to treat migraines.

Actually Naproxen when dosed appropriately is very effective at stopping a migraine especially when taken when Reglan(metoclopramide) or another anti emetic.

Problem is most people think that narcotics are better.

This. Tylenol worked great for me when I had my wisdom teeth pulled. 1g(aka standard dose) and the pain was gone.
Narcotics was not required.

800mg ibuprofen (or about 600mg naproxen) is how much they give in a single maximum prescription strength pill. And generally the prescriptions state "take one every 8 hours, with meal, etc etc" generally until either the pain is gone or until the prescription is out... and they'd prefer you to not finish that bottle but is acceptable if the pain is terrible (and generally they'd want to give you some opiod-related pharm if the issue is at that level).

True NSAIDs aren't exactly life-threatening at maximum prescription dosages for the long-haul. I never suffered complications when I got into a rhythm with the shit. But the real concern, and very possible at those excessive dosages for long-term cases, is stomach ulcers. Treatable, and not likely (but complications are always possible) to prove fatal, but not something you'd probably want to go through if you could avoid (this is the motivation I use to ween myself from the dependencies).

I'm more worried about my excessive caffeine intake and seriously need to cut back. I'm dreading the first few days and keep procrastinating that recovery. :|

And renal failure. At 'normal' doses paracetamol is much safer in the long run than NSAIDs.

Proof?

So NSAIDs give you ulcers and mashe your kidneys, increase heart attack risks... parcetamol kills your liver.

hell, laudanum is probably better for you. (addiction aside).

So, when should I expect my class action settlement check from McNeil Pharmaceutical for the amount of $2.57 for the lifetime of pain and suffering I'm going to have after having taken Tylenol maybe a half dozen times in my life?

Seriously though, I don't take Tylenol - not because of the side effects, but rather because it won't even TOUCH a simple low grade headache of mine. Never has, never will.

I almost never take acetaminophen by itself, but since it's in Excedrin...something that I take almost daily...I still ingest the stuff. For whatever reason, plain aspirin or plain acetaminophen don't do a damned thing for me, but mix the two and throw in a nice dose of caffeine...and it's the best damned headache remedy around...for me anyway. 3 Excedrin (or store brand "extra-strength pain reliever) and my headache is usually gone within 30 minutes. I can take percodan, vicodan, (with benadryl) and even oxycontin and the headache remains.

Proof positive we need more percocet in our daily lives!

But if you take percocet, you're still ingesting acetaminophen. Switch to percodan instead. Same oxycodone...just without acetaminophen. (aspirin IIRC)
