small office phone systems

for a small office of under 10 employees, there are many small office pbx systems out there like Nortel Norstar Compact 3x8 which supports up to 3 lines and 8 extensions. Something like this can be purchansed for around $500. Thats cheap compared to using a centrex from the phone company.

So my questions are:

- what sort of phone lines do we need to use? that is, we need voicemail, interoffice communication, swithcing calls from one ext to another, and other basic features of a small busness sys... so can we simply have 3 regular phone lines come into the building and plug those directly into the PBX? Or do the phone lines need to be wired or in some sort of hunt formation?

so, suppose the main phone number is 555-1111 which the receptionist picks up then tranfers to another extension, what happens to that call? does it stay on the 1111 line? if so, how would another call that comes in get through? If the call is tranfered to another line, say 2222, then wouldnt that require "special" lines that are wired/correlated together?

sorry, im not a phone guy, any input is greatly appreciated!

Typically it can be programmed any way you want it to work, the beauty of computers.
