Hello all,

Just ordering 7 copies of Win XP Pro to put on our workstations.

What OS should I order for our server? and do I have to order it based upon how many computers will be hooked up to it?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!!

Sincerely,

Sean McNamara

if you still had $$ to spend... i had better experience w/ w2k as a server in my office...

if you want to save some money.. redhat 7.3 and mandrake 8.2 are good also...

for win2k you must order the license for how many users you're going to have as your client workstations
for linux distros... no license required but more configuring and tweaking awaits you ... :) :) :)

Thanks! - I was worried about that =) Luckily its not my credit card (coroprate) so I have racked up about 20 grand in the last hour on workstations, flat panels, os's etc..... its actually fun when it is not yours!

Now when I purchase "Microsoft Windows 2000 Server 10 cal Retail" - I still have to purchase and install win XP or another OS on each workstation - because what the liscense is actually saying is "you need a liscense to access the server from each computer in your workground?" is this corrent?

Thanks

Sean

There are two basic types of (CAL)licensing models in Win2k. Per-seat and Per-server. Don't confuse the license for the OS with the CAL. Every OS on your network needs a license (this comes with the product). CAL's are another issue altogether.

CAL's work one of two ways...

1) Per Seat: Requires a seperate CAL for each client computer the access the server. With one CAL, a client computer can connect to any number of servers. Organizations with more than one server generally use this method

2) Per Server: Requires a CAL for each concurrent connection to the server. This means, at any given time, a Server supports a fixed number of connections. More popular in small networks.

You can change from per server to per seat ONCE at no cost. You CANNOT convert from per seat to per server.

In your situation, you would be better suited toward Per Server mode. You will notice this as the default option when you install 2k server. Just plug in the number of CAL's you have purchased, and put the papers somewhere safe.

I'd recommend Netware over win2k but it all boils down to what you know and if you can realistically administer the server. What do you want this server to do for you?
