is there any computer out there thats under 750 bucks, and really thin and light? no fantastic features needed- in terms of power/ memory/ storage. just a nice useable machine?

i didn't think there really was, (i'm looking for a friend with a tight budget)

reccommendations?

EDIT: some "requirements"

- built in burner + DVD player
- 1024x768 resolution at least
- not PDA, not linux or anything- a solid computer for someone who doens't know much about them.
- wifi enabled (integrated)
- preferably not ebay, as want something with manufacturer guarantee/ warranty

Used Sony VAIO (POS) laptop or slower but solid IBM ThinkPad X/T/R series.

I got a used sony r505 (750mhz p3, 384 mb ram, 20gb hd) for $400 off ebay a while back. It's a bit scratched up, but I don't care as I beat the hell out of it anyways. I really like it, and the price was right.

Check out ebay.

My old IBM Thinkpad 240 was a great little machine, only about 3 lbs and they're dirt cheap on eBay.

drawbacks:
- 300 - 366 MHz depending on model
- 800x600 display
- no built-in CD or floppy (be careful buying on eBay, you want one that comes with the external floppy)
- battery life is only a couple of hours

Pretty much your only option after reading your edit is one of those averatec or sotec systems at officedepot. Their screens suck though and they're pretty shoddily constructed.

Personally, I think you're being incredibly unrealistic.

See that FS/FT thread. The Portege has built-in wireless. But looking at your post again, looks like you want a new one.

post-edit the answer changes to "not very likely" -- CDRW+DVD combo drive, 1024x768, and small = expensive. If you settle for a normal 7-8 pound machine there are Hot Deals all the time.

I don't understand this at all. She requires a DVD/CDRW and 1024x768 resolution, but a PDA will probably do instead?
I think a used laptop will cause less headaches in the future than the PDA. Hell, you can get a system on ebay that still has warranty left on it if you're that concerned about it.

well if she goes PDA, she'd be able to get something for a lot cheaper which will serve her purposes, its just that if she has a laptop she'd like it to do all this other crap.
