I have a bigger laptop bag, but I need to be able to put the laptop in a backpack. I need something that is basically form fitting to the laptop just to give it protection within the backpack. I can't get another backpack that has protection built into it. I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 so it's fairly big. Any suggestions as to what might meet my needs? I don't need pockets or anything as my backpack can hold everything. Thanks.

EDIT: In fact, it doesn't even have to be a bag I buy. Maybe something I can make.

Use a 1.5" binder and get however thick foam you think you need. I'm using a ~1.5mm foam that you find under mobos with a 1" binder for my dell d500.

Hmm, I had an old binder except it is 2.5" and lucky for me too because it's a real tight squeeze. Unluckily only one of my mobo boxes had that foam in it. Is there anywhere else that I could easily acquire a piece of foam like that? Thanks, for your help.

If your binder has this "customizable cover" things you can try stuffing paper in it. Works out find for me if I do it that way since I had a hard time trying to remove the 3 rings. I just inverted the binder so the 3 ring is on the outside and the cover is on the inside. So use that foam on the bottom, and use paper on the sides. I only have one peice of foam too.
Plus the binder doubles as a stand for your lap or bed. Helps the rubber legs stand and vent heat from the bottom.
