Small hole in my ATA 100 cable

Yea I've seen that too (once)😕 don't know why, but I really want to know. I have thought to make a hole(on the right cable) in one of mine spare ide cables to find out if it still would work, probably it will.

That is what makes the cable, cable-select instead of master/slave. Jumper the drives as CSL and you're good to go.

Yes, all 80-wire cables are supposed to be made for cable select though there are more elegant ways to do it than punching a hole in a wire, but that's the cheapest. If you set your drives to master/slave, the cable select lines are ignored.
