So I overhauled a 1973 7 HP Tecumseh engine on a snow blower. I replaced the points and condenser and placed everything back together. Started it up and it barely idled and shot gas out from the carburetor and sparks from the muffler. Im like WTF, I thought the cam sprocket was wrong or there was something wrong with the coil. I took the flywheel off and noticed the entire points and condenser is mounted on oblong bolt holes. In order to time this engine I had to remove the cylinder head and place a nickel (.080) on the piston and moved the crank until the piston was .080 BTDC. I then loosened the bolts on the breakpoints and moved them until the breakpoints opened (spark). I used a millimeter on OHM mode to verify. I put everything back together and it ran perfectly. Im surprised at this because older Briggs engines with Points and Condenser didnt allow timing adjustment.
