small claims court?

How does this work? If I sued a corporation and I am supposd to show up in court, what's the process? Do I call people to the stand and such? Or do I just say my side, they say theirs - then the judge makes the decision? This is in California BTW.. or is it different by counties too? I heard there's mediation or times where u can make deals before the case starts in other states.. so I was curious - thanks..
