I have the 50mb/5mb service from comcast, and I already pay about 100$ or so a year to a good hosting company, so I figured if I purchase a small little server, I could throw on apache + mysql, and and open up FTP to myself.

My basic requirements would be it would have to be quiet, nearly fanless, and smallish, ie no bulky older PCs.

I would not mind running a CS 1.6 server off of it too, IF possible, but not required.

I could use my current PC and setup a VMWARE system, if anyone thinks that is a good idea , not sure though.

If you want to go the separate computer route, then how about a Shuttle KPC45? The barebones is only $100, add some cheap DDR2, whatever HDD you want and a cheap Celeron 420 CPU and you're gold!

dell had a <$300 basic server awhile back. i don't know if they have anything close to that cheap anymore but it's always worth checking.

For a small home server that needs to be cheap, quiet and possibly be remote-managed (ie, no keyboard, mouse monitor and stuck on a closet shelf) I would recommend something like this. At just over a foot tall and just under a foot long this unit is about the size of an encyclopedia volume.
