I just recently purchased a laptop. I was looking for a small and portable card reader for both compact flash and smartmedia. I found a nice one that fits into a pcmcia slot at buy.com for compact flash. READER. I was looking for something similiar for smartmedia. If not a pcmcia based one, maybe a small USB based one. Or one thats a combo reader that is either USB or PCMCIA based. Any help is great.

thanx again

I have that Viking compact flash card reader and I can tell you it works great. Seamless integration, no drivers required. It really surprised me how well it works. I've never used any other kind of storage media, so I can't share my experience or suggestions for those devices.

PCMCIA Smartmedia readers are generally expensive compared to CF readers because they actually require some sort of reader. Compactflash cards are almost pin compatible with PCMCIA card slots so the CF adapters are passive converters that just adapt the CF pins to PCMCIA pins. That's why CF PCMCIA adapters can be found for $10 or less.
