So, my friends plan to start a B&M store selling stuff.

He ask me what kind of cash register / EPOS software should be use, he has ~ 1k budget.

All I know is that there are 2 types of machine, mechnical based (i.e. sharp, casio one) vs pc-based (i.e. NCR, software driven).

I found some windows-based system with no monthly fee (atrex, retail ice, etc), but are more leaning towards linux/Open source.

I have yet find a system that use MySQL database.

So what kind of cash register / EPOS system do u guys use in a small B&M business environment ?

pls advise, thanks in advance

You could always use Quick Books' register program. You install it onto a computer and you buy their proprietary components. It's pretty nifty.

What does he want to sell?
Do a goofle and find a forum/message board that caters to that industry and you will find countless discussions on POS systems.. pros and cons.
If you need ideas, liquor store and convenience store discussion boards contain lots of good info.

A friend owns a fully automated/computerized POS system.. It's just cool how it produces all paperwork at will.. For example, at the end of the night, you hit on button and it prints out a list of everything sold that day so that the part time employee can replenish stock more efficiently.. Computers ! gotta love em

he will be opening a sports equipment business (customization and repair)

hmm... wonder if there are any small business forums like anandtech?

I set up a store for a client a few months ago. I used samsung 650 registers and a program called sampos- turned out really well, and it is easy to learn. U will need a separate credit card machine though, if you are going to take them. If you want PM me for more details.

For that budget I'd say look at quickbooks POS.

Intuit is a great company for small businesses. Great add ons as well - bar code scanner, employee punch clock, credit card swipe, ect. And they role in easily into the accounting end of quickbooks to track everything that you'd need to track.

It's easy to manage, easy to use, and has actual support if you should need it. Intuit's tech support is MUCH cheaper than what you would be charged if you needed help on most other POS registers. It's much easier to program as well.

I'm REALLY not a fan of the old fashioned push key registers. They may last forever...but this is 2004. You can get sooooo much more out of a pos than a simple tally of what your sales were.

BTW - I work with large scale pos systems for a living - Micros and Radiant (PPC and PC based respectively).

We're using Wintegrity (Windows PC based) currently for our family owned businesses but aren't too happy with it. Looking to switch to something else but probably won't happen for another year.

I agree that Quickbook is a very good company for small / startup business. We aren't doing any point of sales right now, but out distribution and daily operation cannot survive without Quickbook softwares.

Use new RFID POS systems...

yeah right, find one for me under 1k ?

Quickbook POS looks promising, but I remember last year TurboTax (the same company - Intuit) put some activation cr@p in the software.

btw, Quickbook POS is windows based, I wonder if there are any comparable linux based POS software in the market...

PC POS parts can get over $700 easy... and this is w/o the computer & Software!
cash draw, price display, barcode reader, receipt printer then you need a pc itself to hook em up....

stay the hell away from retail pro.

I know it looks like you're out of your budget, but they will go all out to get you on a finance plan for a piece of software that absolutely sucks and isn't worth a millionth of what they're asking.
