update 2:
received daytons / tp21 t-amp today. did some blind A/B comparison, both speakers on my desk, connected to a splitter from my PC. my wife switching the volume controls between the two while listening to a variety of music.
lets just say I'm returning the av40s. vocal clarity of the tp21s/daytons blows them away, and from the side by side I can tell that the midrange of the m-audios is vastly inflated. the daytons have slightly better low end extension as well, unsurprising considering the 6.5" vs 4" speaker. for 39 + 55 (on ebay) for the amp, they destroy the $114 m-audios.
bonus, the little amp looks sweet on my desk:
update:
i received the maudios yesterday. they're definitely well made, great stereo imaging, and very clear mids and highs. the bass leaves something to be desired though.
i went ahead and ordered a topping tp21 amp and the dayton bookshelves which have 6.5" vs. 4" woofers. I'll see how those compare....
OP:
i need a pair of smaller bookshelves...i'll probably run them off a t-amp or something similar. The dayton bookshelves would probably do fine, but they are 11-13/16" (H) x 7-1/16" (W) x 6-7/16" (D), and i'm wondering if I can't find something just a tiny bit smaller, perhaps with 5" woofers, < $100. any ideas?
