Small biz computer/point-of-sale for a friend

A friend of mine owns a landscaping/design business. He's pretty good at it and keeps busy (has an established customer base and what not). He's opening a nursery/office for his business and he asked me to look for a "point of sale" type of PC that he could use. He mentioned he wanted a flatscreen (touchscreen, probably) and that he had some small biz/point-of-sale software already.

Where can I look for this sort of thing? How are cash registers typically hooked up to a PC (serial port, usb, etc) or are they?
I figure I could probably call IBM/Dell/some local computer store and get a sales pitch, but I was looking for a more personal experience/bit of advice. Thanks in advance...

I used to do support for a company that sold POS systems, most cash drawers are RJ11 (plugs into a custom connector) or in some rare cases serial (older ones) , I'd check out IBM's POS offerings they seem to be the most reliable and easiest to fix if their are actualy issues + they offer and completely intergraded system including touchscreen, keyboard w/ CC swiper, scanner and PC, I forget the model off the top of my head but it was pretty slick and fairly reliable, Also their thermal recipt printers tend to have less issues than some of the competing brands, like the Epsons and Ithicas.
