small bitter victory for Sega (ESPN) sports over Madden!!!

It's because madden 05 for the pc blows. It's a console port unlike madden 04 which was a real pc game. What a ripoff EA tried to pull.

i will admit i was an EA lover / ESPN hater up until this year. This year I realized that madden's gameplay hasn't changed really since 2003 or so, and I actually gave ESPN NFL 2K5 a chance. and boy am I glad I did. I just got xbox live last weekend as well, and playing ESPN on there is awesome, and there was absolutely no lag! I loved it!

i have also played ESPN NFL this year and it rocks, although I havent played NHL yet. I am no hockey fan at all though. I won't be purchasing either. As for the bball games, last year I hated ESPN basketball and loved EA, but this year I have yet to try either, and doubt I will. I just don't enjoy bball games that much anymore

but now i must agree that ESPN NFL 2K5 > Madden 2005.

Definitely.

This exactly what Sega is hoping for... That the $20 pricetag will urge the Madden fans to give ESPN a try. Once they do, they'll like what they see and become a loyal customer.

I love my ESPN and it's custom soundtracks. It's awesome to make a first down on a 4th and inches and then hear MC Hammer's Too Legit to Quit come on the stadium loudspeaker.

hahahah nice, i haven't tried out that feature of the game yet 🙂. i also just got ESPN NFL 2K5 when I purchased live last weekend. i had played it before but i didn't want to buy it at the time. i hate playing competition games against the AI, and if friends aren't over, there is no way to play it. so i had to get live.

now i cant stop buying games that i can play on live lol

I had been an EA NHL'9x hockey fan into 2001 but when NHL2k3 by Sega came out, I thought it was the better game. Have ditched EA for Sega/ESPN the last 3 game years.

I've been a big fan of Sega's hockey games, but I'm not all that thrilled with NHL2k5. I can't really pinpoint why, but it just feels really boring.

Might try NHL2005, once I find it used (read: cheap.)

To say that gameplay mechanics haven't changed in the last 2 years just means that either you don't play much madden or you aren't very good at it. Defense has changed remarkably between completely different DB AI, Defensive audibles, and the Hit Stick. Well not so much the hit stick, but its fun anyway. Playmaker can also make a huge difference on offense if you get the hang of it. If you're using some crappy PC gamepad it hasn't changed, but if you have a real dual analog pad or a ps2 controller hooked up to the PC you can take advantage of the newer features. I mean a lot of formations and basic option plays weren't even added until 04 and 05.

ESPN 05 is good, its even better in some regards to Madden, I'm not arguing that it hasn't made inroads, but I think overall there isn't much contest. If you're strapped for cash by all means pick up ESPN, but just because madden hasn't gotten a graphical update since 03 doesn't mean it isn't a very different game.

I think the biggest victory Sega Sports got came from ESPN's relationship with ABC. This relationship apparently forced Monday Night Football's computer-simulated matchups to be rendered in NFL2K's engine as opposed to "Madden"'s engine. Talk about a slap in the face to Madden and Al Michaels (who both commentate the EA title). LOL

Peace

I prefer ESPN NFL over madden as well, the graphics in madden dont compare. I like the movements and passing game in ESPN much much better. I also think the Challenge feature is better in ESPN.
I remember palying Madden 04 and challenging a catch in bounds or not and then getting it ruled out of bounds but I somehow got 1st and 10 where the passer was "out of bounds" happened all the time actually. I havent had any errors like this with ESPN. Also i think the playmaker controls are nice and all but they arent all that amazing, hot routes can be done with ESPN as well, changing the entire play on the flay etc. Madden lets you adjust the defense a little more precisely but I find the controls to be more confusing than useful.
The Hit Stick is also overrated, its a nice feature but its no different than charging up and then tackling in ESPN.

Just chiming in..I like ESPN 2k5 too. I like the speed of the game compared to Madden, and the movement, as someone else said. It just feels right. The graphics are kick ass too.
