Small 720p HD video camera suggestions

Looking for some personal experience with small HD video cameras. I need one for work, but haven't messed with any video cameras sense the crappy miniDVD recording. It is light use for making training videos. 720p should be plenty and easer to work with in editing and playback. (edit: if image stabilization isn't standard or cameras now, i'd really like this as an option.)

What i don't want is anything from Sony. I know some of the sensors may be sony anyway, but not at sony branded camera.

I'd also like to avoid the need to use OEM software to copy the video from the camera or removable storage media. We have an old version of adobe premier elements. I'm guessing we will need to buy a newer version unless i get some good recommendations for other software.

Any other general tips or suggestions are welcomed.

What video format do most small cameras use for storage and how compressed is the data vs. a finished mp4 or x264 format? I'm going to start looking at some myself; but, i was given a two week deadline on getting a camera in.

Thanks for any information.
