I have a motorola sm56 ISA modem in my computer and it only connects to my ISP at 28.8. My ISP supports x2 and V.90 but not k56flex. My modem says it supports V.90 and k56flex. I downloaded and installed the latest drivers, but I still only connect at 28.8. Also, I always connect at exactly 28.8. What should I do so my connection doesn't suck so bad?

Problem might be in your phone lines. If you have another line in your house or other jacks for your line, check those out. Also, you can plug a modem directly into your outside phone box and see if you can get 56k from there (house might be wired bad).

Make sure the number that your modem dials is a 56k number. ISPs have different numbers for different speeds.

Put one of the following commands in your "Extra settings" box for the modem. To do that, go to control panel/modems/Properties/Connection/Advanced/Extra Settings.
First, I would put "*MM15" (no quotes) in the Extra Settings box. That disables Kflex, so it shouldn't try to connect with Kflex as it may be now. Then, if that doesn't help, add one of these other commands listed below:

Start with "%B29" first (no quotes), and work your way back through the list. These limit the connect speed of the modem.

%B19 v.90/32k
%B37 v.90/33.333k
%B38 v.90/34.666k
%B21 v.90/36k
%B39 v.90/37.333k
%B40 v.90/38.666k
%B23 v.90/40k
%B41 v.90/41.333k
%B42 v.90/42.666k
%B25 v.90/44k
%B43 v.90/45.333k
%B44 v.90/46.666k
%B27 v.90/48k
%B45 v.90/49.333k
%B46 v.90/50.666k
%B29 v.90/52k

I tried putting in MM15, but then I get 630- Internal Hardware failure messages every time I try to connect. I also tried just %B29 and some of the others but I still just connect at 28.8.

Some times you have to say what the heck! I bought a zoom last year couldn't connect faster than 33,600. I tried numerous init strings nothing. Ran new wiring to my computer, nothing. Bought a diamond supra winmodem for $35.00 and haven't connected slower than 49,333 since.
I just found out they finally got cable in my area. I might be pulling this modem soon.

The correct command is with an asterisk preceding the "MM..", so the command looks like this:

*MM15

If that doesn't work, try *MM14
