I was heading for my morning shopping yesterday and the FM station was playing a huge block of Sly and the Family Stone songs, and I'm thinking wow, they were a really good psychedelic Funk/Soul band. The DJ at the end of the set says we are playing Sly Stone today because he has died at 82 of complications from COPD. I'm like damn, he was still alive up until now. My first recollection of them was a report on the news that they arrived at their concert in DC, oh an hour or so late, due to, well, not be able to get it together I guess. Oh course I was around 13 and my parents were all Tsk Tsk about it. Anyway I'd just like to say, Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself.

I watched the documentary about him that was produced by Questlove last week. It was excellent!

RIP

Stand!

Sly & The Family Stone

Stand, in the end, you'll still be you

One that's done all the things you set out to do

Stand, there's a cross for you to bear

Things to go through if you're goin' anywhere

Stand for the things you know are right

It's the truth that the truth makes them so uptight

Stand, all the things you want are real

You have you to complete and there is no deal

Stand, stand, stand

(Everybody, yeah)

Stand, stand, stand

Stand, you've been sitting much too long

There's a permanent crease in your right and wrong

Stand, there's a midget standing tall

And a giant beside him about to fall

Stand, stand, stand

Stand, stand, stand

Stand, they will try to make you crawl

And they know what you're sayin' makes sense at all

Stand, don't you know that you are free

Well, at least in your mind if you want to be

Everybody

Stand, stand

IMO no greater soul-funk band ever than Sly and the Family Stone. I have played them 43 times on my college radio show. Most played:
