I freakin' LOVE Slurpees. I have my entire life. Probably the only reason I kept playing little league baseball was for the post-practice and post-game Slurpees.

So, Slurpees have been around since 1967 (according to Wikipedia). That is 44-45 years for those of you who do not want to do the math.

7-11 sells Slurpees by the boatload. When you think of 7-11, you probably think of Slurpees 1st, 2nd or at worst, 3rd.

So, all that being said, why the heck has the technology for making Slurpees not gotten to the point where the machines do not break down all the damn time?

It is a crap-shoot when I pull into a 7-11 parking lot as to whether or not the machine will be functioning. Today, I had promised my son a Slurpee after soccer practice (it was all a ruse so I could get one ;)) and we literally had to go the THREE 7-11's to find one that had a functioning machine!

Slurpees are licensed ICEEs, which were around a lot longer than that.

Well it's been hot and they're self serve and we know the general public isn't smart so they're the ones breaking them.

No 7-11's near me, but I almost daily indulge in a 32oz Frozen Slushie ... its my caffeine instead of 2 cups of coffee.

The secret recipe is the machine they use (it's also quite complex for a drink machine). It's patented and nobody is allowed to copy it. They use regular soda syrups for the flavors.

patents expire after ~10yrs.

there should be slurpee clones glaore!

but the name brand coipyright lasts forever. thus why the clones arent that successful. the sheepies follow Slurpee brand which are only at 7-11.

I think they copyrighted the process too. I know when we had one some decades back we had a ton of paperwork to fill out and had to be trained on maintenance.

My parents owned several 7-Elevens over the course of 25 years. I can't even remember the Slurpee machines ever breaking.

They do have to defrost regularly though. Presumably this is because they would freeze solid otherwise. Maybe they're defrosting and you think they're broken?

We have a Racetrack gas station near work, it's almost new and they have at least 7-8 machines all with different flavors, I'm hooked too, nothing better to cool off a hot FL afternoon than a ride-home slurpee AND the large is only $1.39..

This sounds very likely, and the attendants just say its broken so they don't have to deal with the crap.

I had so many of these last summer when I worked across the parking lot from a convenience store. Good times. There's really nothing better on a hot day. Best thing is to layer the flavours.

There's basically two kinds of slush here: Mac's Froster and 7-11's Slurpee. I find Frosters are a little too syrupy. The classic Slurpee is still the best. The machines do break down constantly though. When I was shooting lacrosse games earlier this summer, they had Jolly Rancher slushes at the arena. Damn thing was never working though. It was hot as satan's sweaty balls at that place. Could have really used one. :(

All of our local 7-11 became Circle K a few years ago. Circle K stores don't have Slurpee or Iceee but some kind of crushed ice with colored sweeten stuff. It was not good at all.

But Circle K stores have 64 oz drinks for 76 cents, including sale tax. Not bad for the price, even better than the $1 large drink from McD.

Patents - Monopoly given for physical objects and processes Also, ridiculously for software

Copyright - the monopoly given for the distribution of printed works.

Trademark - a Company's branding

Edit:
Btw, Pina Colada is about the only decent Slurpee unless you can find the ultra rare rootbeer.

I bought a few to play the 7-11 summer game. So far I have won some food prizes, red box rental and movie ticket. The Slurpees were just plain nasty however. The last one I bought was back in '05.

After slurping on a Sonic slush, you will spit out your slurpees from now on.
