Sluggish Mouse

Hello. I stumbled across this forum while doing research for building a new computer. However, the only reason I'm buying a new computer is because my mouse is sluggish when loading internet pages and opening new sessions of IE. It has driven me crazy over the last several months.

The mouse didn't use to move choppy like it does now. I have a P3 800Mhz with 256Mb of ram. I initially noticed the sluggish movement after installing hte latest version of IE, so when I thought that might have been the problem I reformatted and installed the version of IE that I knew didn't cause trouble with my mouse. This didn't do the trick though.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be the problem or to any potential fixes before I go spend money on a new computer that naturally I don't really need. : ) Like I said, it didn't used to do this, and I've reformatted a few times to try to pinpoint if a particular program was causing the problem. I've installed all the driver updates I could find. I'm using a MS intellipoint mouse (with the chord). Also, I want to make sure I dont' spend money on a new computer and still have this problem. So, I'm looking for any info.

Thanks for any help.

Have you tried both USB and PS/2 ports(Presuming your mouse can use either) and also try it in another PC,this will rule out a faulty mouse.Another option is try your PC with a different mouse as well.

Try taking the mouse apart and cleaning the little ball and the pocket. You will be surprised how much crud can be in there.
