sluggish internet/IE/explorer

hi, i am experiencing sluggishness in explorer and internet explorer when i load pages or scroll. Specifically, when i load pages, or open explorer, winamp will pause for a second, and HD activity goes way ups. Same thing when i scroll rapidly or click through links somewhat quickly. The hard drive seems to be at use far too much, especially for a 512 meg system. I just reformatted my system, and its only been happening since i reformatted. Programs new to the system since the time before i reformatted are: grokster, lightwave, ground control, and an updated version of intel application accelerator. I know grokster comes with adware (cydoor), and it wont work without it, so i specifically told AdAware to ignore cydoor. I have run full system checks for viruses (with updated definitions from norton) and Adaware, without finding anything malicious. 3dmark score is the same (6200). Is there anyway to remedy this problem? all input appreciated. thanx.

Intel Application Accelerator? Dude... if proggies like that go bad, they're usually the ones that cause most of the other noticable issues. My advice: dump it and run things normally...

As far as IE goes... if resetting all web settings doesn't work, try this.

mucho gracias cobalt. I will try those suggestions very soon. i know on intel's site, one of the install reqs for application accelerator is the Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility. I don't remember installing that, do you suppose it comes installed with XP? if not, how might i see if it is installed? (i know it wont show up in the uninstall list, it wasnt there before i reformatted, and i am almost sure it was installed).

Well, I have XP Pro at home, and I don't have that accel. proggy installed. It's not part of the default install, so you had to either change the install afterwards or dl/buy and install it.

Check your Windows Setup tab (in the same Add/Remove Programs list) and look for it. If it's listed, it'll be an included feature of XP. I'm guessing that it's not.
