Sluggish DVD drive

A few months ago I swapped the CD/RW on my work computer with a CD/RW DVD drive from one of the new comps that came in. Ever since swapping them the drive has been performing very poorly and most the time doesn't read the disc I put in. It's also been making a bunch of coasters. I don't understand what the problem would be since the computer recognizes the correct drive. I've never had problems adding a new drive, but so far everything I've tried has not worked. Today I tried installing PowerDVD but since the drive is so slow it fails during installation.

Has that drive functioned well in any machine?

Make sure the drive is running in DMA mode under Device Manager.

I don't know, I swapped them right when we got the computer. I would just swap it back with my old one, but I don't know which computer it belongs to.
