slowness accessing the local network using internet addresses through the router?

If I go to http://localhost, it's very fast. If I visit http://ctho.ath.cx from remote proxies, work, etc, it's reasonably fast (as fast as I'd expect from a cable modem considering the traffic I get). If I visit http://ctho.ath.cx (or 72.x.y.z or whatever my IP is right now) from a machine on my network, it's incredibly slow and I only get a few hundred to a few thousand bytes before it stops and I get no more data. My router is an airlink101 ar680w; this didn't happen with my old (but flaky) linksys router. What would cause that?
