Slowing down the CPU of a laptop?

I know most or all laptops should have some kinda CPU managment right? Like speedstep, and whatever AMD calls theirs.

For example the Emachines AMD 64 Laptop runs at 800mhz on battery and if it was functioning correctly it would automatically go to full speed at 1.8Ghz when processing power is demanded by the user.

I was wonder if its possible to decrease the speed even more to save more power when on battery. Say dropping it down close to 500 - 600mhz maybe, that should be sufficent enough for typing, or word processing and reading emails.

Is it possible to go down to that low of a speed?

I am using SpeedSwitchXP for my Dell laptop .. (inspiron 8500).

Its a Pentium 4 M 2.4 Ghz. Under the "max battery" setting, the programs makes my CPU run at 287 mhz. Its enough to surf the net.... etc.

Wow that pretty extreme, have you tested how long your battery life is when its thats slow?

Well ... the battery is lasting me over 3 hrs in dynamic switching.... (thats the mode where the CPU runs at 1200 mhz, and when processing power is needed, it switches to 2400 mhz...)

So i havent used it yet.

Things ar a lil slow with Max Battery on, but very tolerable....
