Slower FPS Than Normal?

I recently purchased and installed a XFX 6870, and proceeded to run the Far Cry 2 (action scene) Benchmark. My average frame per second was 37.36 with a resolution of 1440 x 900. I poked around online, and this is less than half the FPS of much higher resolutions. Any idea what gives?

Specifications:
Intel Core 2 Quad 8200,
6 GB DDR2? RAM,
Asus P5QL-VM EPU, and
Seasonic 500W PSU.

Are the video card drivers updated? What settings are your AA\AF? What about video card temps? I used CPUIDs Hardware Monitor to check up on temps.

I believe so, when I check Device Manager under Display Adapters, it says AMD from the 5th of April. However, when I try to open Catalyst Control Center, I get this.

What settings are your AA\AF?

AF not sure, AA is x8, the same as it is in the online benchmarks. I set this inside of the Far Cry 2 Benchmark Tool.

What about video card temps?

It idles at 45 C, and hit 61 C after playing Arma 2 for 10 or so minutes.

Maybe you're CPU limited. Have you tried running the benchmark at a lower res (or without AA)? If you are CPU limited you'll see about the same frame rate at the lower res even though there's less for the GPU to render.

Yeah, it looks that way to me. The bright side it you could use a larger monitor with little to no performance hit. You may be able to boost some graphics settings with no frame loss, but try them a few at a time. There are settings require CPU processing, so those would drop your frame rate, obviously.

If you're considering an upgrade for the CPU, I think you'd be better off with something like a 2500k vs trying to find a socket 775 drop in replacement. Unless you can grab a used one that you know is in good condition, the new ones that would be a real upgrade cost almost as much as a much better new motherboard +CPU combo.

Yeah, I'm still a student, and have to plan out purchases in advance, so that's out of reach right now. I'm glad to hear this though, that means I can slap on higher visual settings!
