slowdown after file transfers on XP LAN

Since installing XP, when I transfer files between my machine and another, my entire system slows down for several minutes afterwards (no idea of an exact time, but it's damn long). Opening applications causes the hard drive to grind, switching windows slows down. Eventually everything goes back to normal, but it ONLY happens when I've transferred files between machines.

QOS isn't even installed on the network configuration, and the service isn't enabled on either machine (bandwidth between machines is fine, it's after the transfer that I have problems). I've disabled indexing and System Restore.

What I think it might be is how Windows handles connections to shared folders/drives. If you transfer files and then right after try to delete or unshare them, Windows warns you that the other user is still connected and asks if you really want to unshare or delete. I think that there's a problem with the system in that eventually that connection does normally drop, and that would be when my machine starts working normally again, but until that time there's something not working right.

Any ideas?

I have few installations of XP home, XP pro.

While connecting to the Internet is a breeze, and usually yields faster and more stable connection then the previous OSs, internal Networking is really a pain.

On XP home a lot of the problems gone by resorting to the old Win98 trick. I.E installing NetBEUI, and disconnecting TCP/IP from the internal Network traffic (uncheck file and printer sharing). However, I can not get NetBEUI to work on XP pro (found numerous network sites with the same complain). Using TCP/IP for the internal Network traffic creates a constant havoc (especially when there is software Firewall on each computer). Some problems is a matter of getting use to the more complicated policies, and security gates, but some are not explainable.

I found this document on Microsoft site, and starting to go through it, may be some salvation will come from it.
