Slow write with Plextor 40x12x40A

I just got the new Plextor Plexwriter 40x12x40A, but when I try to burn at anything above 12x, even though the estimated time says like 2:40, it takes forever. I checked the Plextor website which said that the problem might be that DMA is not enabled, but I thought DMA was automatically enabled in XP? How can I check and see if this is enabled? Also, I'm using 32x rated CDRWs, but I don't think thats the prob since even with the CDRW they gave me, which is supposed to be 40x rated, it ran super slow.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be?

I use Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.1 Platinum, and I have the buffer underrun enabled. Also, I'm using Cable Select between my writer and DVD player, if that makes any difference at all. Check my profile for the specs on my comp.

Thanks...

Yeah, actually I knew about that. Ok, maybe I should explain more. I just installed an ATI All in Wonder 7500 video card, and upon loading the drivers, it runs through a compatability check. When it did this, it said it was incompatible with the Plextor because DMA was not enabled. ?? Sys properties only tells you DMA will be used if available, so how do I find out why it isnt available (possibly some hw switch ??) It might also be something else thats causing the slow burns, so any ideas about other possible causes would be helpful as well.

Thanks

"not available" because there is no IDE device connected to that channel/port.

Why not try installing the firmware update for the 40X Plextor... that might help out. Supposedly Verbatium has 40X media out but it's not on their website...

why are you using cable select? Try setting them has master and slave. And if at all possible, put the DVD and CD-RW on its own ide channel.
