Slow wireless connection

In anticipation of getting DSL in my neighborhood, I bought a D-Link DI-711 wireless router and a DWL-120 wireless USB NIC. I hooked one of my PCs directly to the router via its LAN port and the other computer to the wireless NIC. I got the network working, but it is running extremely slow - it took almost 25 minutes to copy a 1.5Mb file from the wired computer to the wireless one. I tried playing with the settings by changing channels (do any of the channels receive less interference from household appliances than others?). I also tried to specify a speed rather than setting it to AUTO. I could only get the 2 PCs to connect when I specified AUTO, 1, 2, or 5.5. I could not make a connection when I forced an 11 Mbps connection. None of this tweaking seemed to make a difference. I also have 40-bit encryption enabled...would this slow things down?

BTW, I do not have any other 2.4Ghz stuff in my house, although maybe my neighbors do. Is there anything that anyone can think of that will increase my network speed. I hate to think that my DSL conenction will be running slower than my dial-up on the wireless computer.

TIA

Disable WEP for the time being and see if that makes a difference. What is your physical layout? Wireless works better in some surroundings than others. Can you move the machines closer together, and if so does that affect performance?

I bet you can get it to work better, but remember there are alternatives to wireless, such as homepna and the new homeplug devices. For example, this new Netgear Xe602 powerline device looks promising, and I've always been pretty happy with my phoneline setup.
