Hi - I bought a Samsung 840 250GB Standard SSD for my desktop, but boot times are slow on my Windows 7 64 bit machine.

It takes about 50 seconds to boot. It is replacing a old Black 7200rpm drive.

I have a 830 SSD in my laptop and it's boot and shut down are instant.

Here are the specs of my computer:

i5-2500K processor
Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H-B3 motherboard
16GB Ram

The SSD is connected to the Sata 6 port in my motherboard.

Attached are several benchmarks and settings. I would appreciate the help in getting boot times to be very quick as I was expecting. There is nothing installed in the machine other than the OS.

2 Questions:

1) was this a fresh install of Win7 or did you clone the old drive to the new SSD?

b. How long was your boot time with the old HDD?

Desktops can take a bit longer than laptops since there are more chipset features to initialize. Also, many laptops use Rapid Start Tech, basically a very deep sleep, rather than a full shutdown, so startup can be much quicker. Besides start up/shut down, how does the system feel otherwise?

Hi

1. This is a fresh install of Win 7

2. The old boot was a bit longer, besides start up/shutdown the system feels fast when opening applications.

I was just expecting startup to be quick.

From the benchmark i ran, it seems im getting the advertised read/write speeds

In addition to LoveMachines questions, are you in AHCI mode or ATA mode?

Are you talking about computer boot time or Windows load time? When Windows starts to load, the computer is booted.

What peripherals are connected and active?

I'm guessing windows is waiting for something to load - a service perhaps, or something network related.

Good ideas above as well of course.

There are various tools for monitoring boot times and what is being loaded, i.e. Window's built-in Event Viewer. Might be helpful looking into something along those lines.

I am in AHCI mode and it it set at the Bios level.

I am referring to Windows boot time, it starts loading the logo, then stalls once the logo is loaded for 15 seconds, then the Welcome sign appears and it takes a few seconds, then it boots up.

This is a fresh install.

Devices attached are logitech camera, brother printer, usb hub, and usb hard drive.

I went to “Control Panel,” go to “System and Security” and head over to “Administrative Tools.” From here, launch “Event Viewer.” Expand “Applications and Services Logs,” “Microsoft,” “Windows,” “Diagnostics / Performance,” and finally “Operational.” Now look out for the Event ID 100:

This shows my Windows 7 boot time, which I believe converts to 55 seconds, this is most recent, if I go back to earlier entries from the day boot time is much longer

Windows has started up:
Boot Duration : 55081ms
IsDegradation : false
Incident Time (UTC) : ‎2013‎-‎03‎-‎02T18:12:27.562400100Z

The other activity with a warning for Boot Performance is this:

Session manager initialization caused a slow down in the startup process:
Name : SMSSInit
Total Time : 40924ms
Degradation Time : 30924ms
Incident Time (UTC) : ‎2013‎-‎03‎-‎02T16:16:55.562400100Z
