Slow USB copy using a newer PC compared with an old

I have a PC with a Asus p4b800e/P4 2.8C combo using the newest firmware drivers on the Motherboard and Windows XP SP2. Another machine is an old P2-350 (most likely with USB 1.0) running Windows ME. When I copy 170 MB of data from the hard drive to a Lexar USB thumb drive it takes easily 2-3 times longer on the newer box. Any ideas???

Thanks

turn off virus scanner, in case it auto scans the usb drive.
maybe try different usb ports.
monitor the cpu activity as well, just to see what it does.

I am already running NAV on both both boxes. But as an experiment I did disable it on the newer box. - No difference.

CPU is pretty much nil.

Wierd. Perhaps it was faster the first time, because the drive was previously un-used, but copying large files the second time, requires the drive to internally erase/pre-format the sectors, causing a delay before they can be written to? Does the drive likewise differ in read speeds between the two machines? You can use HDTach 2.61 to test.

It really sounds like you went from usb 2 to usb 1 even though that seems unlikely. Check to see if you ports are actually 2.0 and measure you actual speed.
