Slow USB 3.0 Transfer Speeds

I have a Dell XPS 8700 with Windows 7, completely up to date.

I have two USB 3.0 external hard drives, a Seagate and Toshiba, both NTFS formatted.

I am only getting USB 2.0 transfer speeds on both drives. CrystalDiskMark reports about 25-30MB/s rates for read and writes. Both drives are plugged into USB 3.0 ports on the back.

I get close to 100MB/s when plugging in the same drives on another computer. I just installed the newest Intel Chipset Drivers and all Windows Updates. Even flashed my BIOS from A01 to A06.

Any other ideas?

I know this seems obvious, but the XPS 8700 has a mix of USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports. Are you sure they are plugged into the 3.0 ports?

Had the same issue when I smart-alecked the Intel USB3 drivers by pointing to the INF files directly, instead of using the Intel installer.
Affected every system and chipset the same way (desktop Z77 / H77 / Z87, laptop x7x).
Had me wondering WTF for a few days when Intel's native USB3 was being outperformed by add-on NEC and ASMedia USB3 HAs o_O

I had problems too with my add-in cards. You need to research for good drivers, they may not necessarily be included on the disc and probably arent included with Windows.

In fact bad drivers may cause multiple devices to stop functioning, which was my issue for a while.

These drivers also fixed the problem of my Kingston USB 3.0 flash drives not being detected by the XPS.

I have had some 10 year old PNY flash drives that wouldn't be detected by various machines so I thought it was again some specific brand/chipset incompatibility.

Hello, I am having the same USB slow speed problems with my Dell XPS 8700. have been trying to access the Drivers from the link that you posted but the Dell site says that the link is no longer accessible. I have tried finding a solution on the web but without any success. Would you be able to post the name of the drivers so I can search for them directly? Your help is greatly appreciated!

Kind regards,

Greg

You should be checking the Dell site for your computer. If you enter the service tag on the Dell site, you will get the drivers that pertain to your pc.

Hello,

I have used the Dell website and checked with my service tag. My drivers are all up to date. But if you read the earlier post the USB drivers Dell has for the XPS 8700 do not work correctly. The other person found the correct ones and posted the link on the website but we can't access it, it says restricted access, maybe a dead link.

I need to find the drivers that actually work and give more than 25MBps with USB 3.0!

Thanks in advance!

I suggest you contact Dell support and explain your issue. This thread is from 2014, so I don't see you getting much help here. Good luck.

You didn't say what OS you were running. If you are running Win7, did you reinstall both the Z87 chipset driver and the Intel USB 3.0 host controller drivers from the Dell support website for the XPS 8700? If you are running Win8/8.1 or Win10, there are also Z87 chipset drivers on the support website under each of the OSes at issue.
