Slow upload from computer to another to USB 3 external drive

Quick detail here as I'm about to be late for work .....more later..

I have a external usb drive (seagate 3tb usb3) hooked up to my pc with USB 3 but notice that when I transfer from my sons pc over my gigabit network (all pc are gigabit and per led on switch all connects at gigabitt speed )which has 5 pc going to a gigabit switch transfering to him from my pc with external drive is fine but uploading from him to me I get only about 1.22-1.68 Mbs.

His hard drive is a WD blue, has latest lan drivers. Have replaced the cables but still slow uploading from him across the lan to me. I can transfer back and forth the external hd to me pc hard drive and speed is good so its I believe a issue with his pc/pc network. I'm running w8 64 and he's on w7 64.

side note I allows get MB/s ans mb/s mixed up but it was going to take about 38 hours to back up his pc (about 300 gb worth of data) across the network. A 120 Mb file took I believe it was about a half a minute or so.

Ok I'll be back later but wil be unable to try anothing on his pc as its raining so he'll be on it.

You're diagnosing his problem. He can stop fiddling around on the internet for a few minutes.

How many files are in that 300GB of data you're trying to copy? If they were almost all tiny text files or something, normal per-file network lag could make it take a long, long time.

A 120MB file in 30 seconds is more like 4MB/sec. That'd be at the low end of the "normal" range if he were connecting over WiFi... If his computer has a Wireless adapter, disable it and try the copies again.

Thanks for the reply....Actually my problem as I want to use the external hd I just bought over the network for backups instead of removing hd and hooking them up to my pc. As far as internet speeds no complaints there...except when I drop his speeds on the router with QOS.

No wifi just cat5e going thru a switch.

I'm going to do a test either Moday when I get home or Friday as I don't sleep on Fridays (work night shift mostly). I'm thinking while back I was using Acronis over the network and got decent speeds while backing it up to a spare hd in my computer.

You need to narrow down your testing to find the actual problem.

What speed do you get copying files to your own computer directly to the USB drive?

What speed do you get copying files from his computer to your internal hard drive (not the USB)?

What speed do you get copying files from other computers on the network to your computer (and to the USB drive)?

If only his computer is slow when copying to your computer, is it also slow copying files from his computer to the other computers on the network?

Did a test on a 120 mb file going from me to him got about 110MB/s, from my external hd to him 108MB/s, from him to me about 6MB/s, from him to my external hd is also about 6MB/s.

Did a test from another computer on the network to my pc and also the external hd and got 110MB/s

Looks like issue is sending data from his computer is slow. Will check his later and see if maybe software causing it (firewall/av although doubt it as other pc is running same software) I know cable from his pc to wall and wall jack is good.

I'll check the jack where it goes from wall to switch tonight when no ones on so I can unplug everything on gang box...maybe a wire didn't get punched down good if thats good going to be the line under house.

BUT first will install another NIC in case his is going bad.

Well going to update this...

Seems his onboard lan is the problem....actually his motherboard is the problem now as no open pcie slots to install a lan card....oh well it needs to be upgraded anyway.
