Slow to type and slow for letters to appear on the screen

I was just wondering if a system is slow to type and slow to have the letters appear on the screen, could it possibly be spyware, or is 100% definitely a virus(es)?
 
could be a virus, or spyware, or could be that something is using most of the CPU, or something is taking a lot of ram. You would have to be a little more specific and give at least some details..
