Slow statup... how to fix?

Is there a way to minimize the number of programs that Windows XP opens during startup? My startup has gotten slow lately... and any help is appreciated.

upgrade from your 64mb to at least 512mb

XP boots up pretty fast for me,(28 sec~) however takes an unusual pause during Shutdown.. i wonder why?
