Here's the situation:
I am paying Cox Communciationsof Fairfax County (Northern VA) $55 monthly for up to 15 Mbps on the download and up to 2 Mbps on the up load-the High Speed Internet package. For most of the day I get between 21-17 Mbps. But during the weekday evenings and Sundays starting about 6 pm, the speed slows to 2-3 Mbps or sometimes lower. This week the slowdown started at 7 pm.
Had Cox out to the house last week (3 techs including Networking guys) who told me that my PC and my wife's PC (hers is wireless) were infected by a virus that turns itself on from 6 pm (this week-7 pm it appears) till after I go to bed and robs my broadband then. At 5:30 am, I'm screaming back at 20 Mbps (use speakeasy.net) Have heard from Cox that gamers are stealing the broadband too. Even heard my Belkin broadband router might be infected too.
Cox told me to reimage both PCs and the problem will go away.
Have also heard that Cox can manipulate the speeds to my port at the node.
So, can anyone tell me reality. I am hesitant to reimage the PCs because it is a pain.
Last December, same problem that lasted till February 2006. Then from February-June absolutle screaming speeds at all times. Mid June, the speeds die again. On July 13-26, speeds screamed at all times. Now, back to sam eproblem.
Thanks,
Ed
