I have a cable modem connections advertised speeds of up to 1.5 mbps. I get fairly fast download speeds on all programs including messenger and others.

As soon as I put the PC behind a router so I can share the internet connection, download and upload speeeds (only on messenger programs and B*tt*rre*t) becomes dead slow. when downloading for other sites, speeds are optimal.

Why does this happen?

Any Ideas?

Oh, I didn't know it was tinfoil-hat time.

Your router should have an interface to redirect incoming ports to different computers on the local network. The B*tt*rre*t protocol has a block of ten ports it uses for uploading; check the documentation.

If you are uploading a lot and maxing out your upload bandwidth then it will totally kill your connection. Make sure for the torrents you use an app like Azureus and tell it to limit the upload bandwidth.
