Slow shutdown-AVG System

As the title says my GT-70 laptop is taking a good long while (a few minutes with an SSD) to shutdown. After several failed attempts to enable verbose mode with the group policy method I tried a the reg edit method and that worked. Now that verbose mode is enabled the computer says "AVG System" for a long time during shutdown.

What can I do to speed this up?

A basic tactic would be to uninstall AVG, run the AVG removal tool, see if the problem still occurs (I assume not), then install AVG again and see if the problem recurs?

AVG has become a very bloated product, and hasn't been a top performer (in virus detection) for years. Avira and Bitdefender have a smaller impact on system performance and actually perform better at virus and general malware detection.

I don't know what AVG is doing. All it says is "AVG System". Everything else happens fast except AVG System, whatever that is. Curiously after I investigated alternate anti-virus solutions AVG quit delaying shutdown. Evidently whatever it was doing it is done now...
