Can someone help me with my SETI time? They are really weak, and I can't stand getting beaten by my brother's Apple G3.

I have a PIII 700 @ 868mhz, 128mb PC133, Windows 2000, Asus P3B-F and my average times are about 12 hours / unit.. why is this so slow?

While that is a slow time, the G3 generally smacks the P3 around in SETI.

He gets about 8.5 hours / unit.... I see that many people have no problem beating that with their PCs.. :)

BTW, It's a Powerbook 500, so I'm sure it's a little slower than a regular G3.

The Mac is generally faster than the pc in seti however you ought to be able to smoke your brother's time.:D Let's see if any of us can help you out any.

First off what are your memory timings? Make sure they are set as fast as possible 2-2-2 and sdram precharge on.

Next which seti client are you running gui or command line and which version?

It's 333, and the GUI version... does that Line version even work correctly in 2000? I tried it a little while ago and it wouldn't get past the Baseline smoothing

SETI@Home Client 2.04

I also went and set the SETI @ Home client as high priority in the Windows 2000 task manager, but it didn't really make any difference.

Do you think I would be better off setting the speed down to 700, with Cas settings as 222 (it does cas2 @ 100) ?

Ok, if your ram will handle it lowering the timing settings will make a huge difference in seti.

What version of the GUI? Are you running it as a screensaver or letting it run all the time in the background? If your running it as a screensaver make sure you have it go to a blank screen pretty quick.

The command line works in 2000 as far as I know. It will read doing baseline smoothing until it's finished with the wu. It looks like nothings happening but it is. If you use the command line version i'd highly recommend setispy to show you the progress.

Try the cmd version again. This time, add the -verbose switch to the end of the command line. If you don't add this, it will appear to be stalled, but it's actually running. I have the same CPU@868 and my times under 98SE are about 6-6.5 hours.

If you're gonna use the GUI version, be sure to blank the screen 1 min after you have it set to come on. I normally set the screen saver at 7 min and blank screen at 8 min. Most users don't complain about this.

RE: ram timings, I have found they don't make a huge difference. Depending on system, maybe 10-20 min faster at 2-2-2.

I don't understand what you mean by "This time, add the -verbose switch to the end of the command line"

Please explain :)

Ahh, there we go, it's working much better now, it's on par for about 6.5 hours / unit.

Thanks Dudes :)

RageEH I hope you and and your brother are members of TeamAnandtech's seti team. If you two are not we'd love to have you join us.:D I looked but didn't see you on the team. I could have just missed you or maybe you use a different name?

Anyway happy alien hunting!!:D:D

Edit: Yeah, btw what did work? Was it just going to the command line client?

Ref -verbose command. In the shortcut to the CLi ,in the target line you should have this below to allow CLi v2.4 to show WU progress.

"C:\Program Files\SETI CLI\setiathome-2.4.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe" -verbose

Thats the command line :)

BTW ,how about joining our team?;)
Was it the blankscreen option that improved your WU times?

That bigger difference will be down to the graphics being shown on the screensaver version ,blanking screen to less than 5 mins will give you WU times very close to the text version.
However the text version is a little quicker ,so thats cool :)

Do you belong to a team?

The site is the heatware trader evaluation database, used by Anandtech, AGN, Sysopt.... etc.

It's a place to check up on people's past deals and reputations.

Why not setup a mini-team under Team AnandTech? All your members can use the same e-mail and compete with people inside the team as well as watch the overall standings of the team rise. :)
