slow SETI times for Athlon 2400+

I just got an AthlonXP 2400+ (model 6, I believe; it runs at 2.0GHz). According to some sites, it should complete WUs in 2-3 hours. I have yet to see one under 4, and 5-6 is more common. Is it because I'm running Win98, or maybe the oldish motherboard? this is what I have:

Asus A7V266-E
256MB PC2100 ram
Win98 se
Don't know what else is relevant.

Using SETI Driver as well, and SET v 3.08. I know 3.08 is a tad slower, but didn't think it would make ths much of a difference....

I'm no expert - I've never run SETI - but I guess from a generic perspective, the first things I'd look at would be your ram speed (and chipset, really). I have no idea how much your choice of OS affects your performance.

Someone who knows what they're talking about step in here 😛

v3.08 is about 15% slower on normal AR (average speed)WUs
Win9x/ME is much slower at doing VLAR (slow) WUs than Win2k/XP ,though 3.08 is better at these rarer WUs.

I used to have that mbrd ,they are still good mbrds despite 'only' having 266FSB (not o/ced)🙂.Bear in mind that newer mbrds will be quite a bit quicker ,especially Nfrc2 mbrds (& KT600s?).
Running my XP1700 in the A7V266-E at 1.9GHz ,152MHz FSB ,CAS 2-2-2-6 gave me WU times of about 2hrs 50mins with average WUs on Win2k.

Have you tried overclocking that CPU?

I've got an XP2400+ running Win2K pro with 256M PC2100 and it averages 2:56 per WU right now...varies up and down...never more than 3:03 average for any given period of time.

Version 3.03 of the CLI!

😕

Okay, it's a work computer so NO OVERCLOCKING! alas... 🙁 I'm running latest BIOS, and yes it's the CLI version. Oh well; it's not a big deal; I was just expecting crazy fast WU times.... this isn't much different from the 1GHz TBird I had in ther ebefore.

My MP2400+ currently averaging 3h33m under v3.03, win2k, 2x512 MB Apacher 266MHz reg/ecc, Tyan tiger S2466-4M.

Of course, it's 2 wu every 3h33m, but still terribly slow. 🙁
The high multiplier is probably the main source of slow performance, but low bus-speed also has some influence.

Oh, and VLAR's is crunched on another machine. 😉

An XP2400 should be w-a-y faster thana 1GHz Tbird!

If I were you I'd switch to v3.03 CLI at the least ,the secuirty flaw is easy to fix btw. That alone would reduce your 5hr WU times to about 4.25hrs.
To get v3.03 use the link at S@H for 3.08 & just change the number to 3🙂

Can you tweak the BIOS RAM timings ?

Well, I downloaded 3.03... last WU I turned in was 5:05, AR was .069 (i forget if smaller numbers or bigger numbers are better...) AFAIk BIOS settings are at optimum levels.

I'll let this run for a few days and see what the avg time is.

Yes, anything with a .0 is a tough one, and win98 is no help with these. Ive seen wu times
that can take an hour or more with 98 over a .417

Btw, is the A7V266-E a KT266A Chipset.

Yes it is

I seem to remember when I had an XP1500 @1.52GHz on my A7V266-E running Win98SE normal WU times were about 3.5hrs whilst VLAR WUs ranged from about 4-5hrs!

unh-hunh... just looking at my work herd of 11 pcs and these are the ARs of what 5 of them are crunching...

0.004 <= Win98 of course...
0.007
0.011
0.011
0.009

Guess it's going to be a crappy day! :|

It's your RAM... go to crucial or find someplace that sells cheap PC3200 ram ...

That should kick up your time....

Soemone hasn't been reading the thread😉

There's no point him getting PC3200 as his mbrd only runs to 266 without o/cing.
Also I can tell you PC2100 in itself won't cause these slow times😛

Get a new Mobo then... Last time I put 2100 in my ECS board timing were off way bad....

and it was mushkin 2100 at that. Oh well...

Fry had a combo 2400 Plus ECS board for 99 bucks tho, I didn't think it was that good. An ok deal but ... not like the 1800 for 59 bucks. 🙂

Well I've been running the CLI client over night and my WU times seem to have dropped from ~5 hours to ~3 hours 🙂

If you had actually taken the time to read this thread (as I already hinted at) & the information hes given us you would of read that the rig in question is a work PC ,so he's hardly likely to buy a new mbrd for it ,is he?😛

Also if you had read what I said about WU times on a KT266a mbrd you would of seen that PC2100 is not a major restriction on good WU times ,my old A7V266-E was getting average WU times of about 2hrs 50mins with an XP @1.9GHz

Your old ECS mbrd used the SiS chipset I believe ,thats why your WU times were bad.
Nice price on the 1800 btw🙂
