Slow read rate on NEC 3500A

I just got my NEC 3500a and I am ripping a dvd using dvd decrypter and it seems to max out at 4x. Is this normal or is something wrong? I thought it would rip faster than that.

there's also some unofficial firmware kicking about (search this forum for "NEC 3500 firmware"), which also removes DVD Region, riplock etc.

/not used it myself tho.

bluntman, you have any changelog or list of improvements or whatever for that 2.18 over 2.16? The readme inside doesnt have them, I'm wondering if it's worth me flashing or not.

I don't, but I only found out about that firmware through thread in another forum. I forget which forum, sorry.

Changelog

The site says that my drive has to be a retail ... is this true? cuz i want to update my firm.

There's a cap on the rip speed, but there's also a flash from other firmware that will disable the cap. I don't know where to get it, but if you got it.. let me know

This one is actually much better than the link you listed.

Most people (and a few of those firmware modifiers) suggest Quikee's 2.28 Extreme on CDRinfo.com's forums.

I have the exact problem with my new nec 3500AG as mine caps out a 3.5X with decrepter and I have flashed to the new 2.18 firmwear and it is suppose to remove the riplock. I used the firmwear from here
