Slow Raid 5 performance?

This is a HD Tach benchmark for a server I just setup. It's a Dell PowerEdge 1800 with a Dell CERC 6 channel SATA Raid Controller (Rebranded Adaptec with 2 additional ports) along with 6 Western Digital WD3200SD (Raid Edition).

I configured the RAID5 array with a 64KB stripe size, Read Caching Enabled, Write Caching Disabled.

Also, I made two partitions. 40gb OS partition and a 1.1TBish data partition. It was a fresh install of Server 2k3.

Does the performance look about right for this kind of setup?

Can people with a Raid-5 setup post their HD Tach benches?

Has the raid 5 be fully initialized ? it will take a long time if you build a fresh w2k3.. install open manager with array manager and you can see..

while the r5 is being rebuild, it will take %% away

Yes, I made sure it was fully initialized before I installed Server 2003. Array Manager says it's at an optimal state.

Ill check mine.. im pretty sure the cerc card isn't that great... i have 250 x2 in raid 1 and 250 x4 in raid 10

this has onboard 64 meg right.. cerc 6 ch.. u got the latest bios ? 4.017 or something..

Yes, 7417. The server was built a few weeks ago so drivers and firmware are fairly new.

Darn Dell cards 🙁

I have a 64MB Intel RAID 5 card... I should run HD Tach for comparison (and I'm curious now). I have 4x400GB Hitachi SATA.

I want to say I get about 30MB/s per drive, but I believe that was according to Intel's diagnostics (and I could be wrong).

Did a quick HD Tach, my setup got ~60MB/s across the entire drive, with a few peaks in spots. This is on a PIII 550MHz. I'm changed to a Sempron 3100+ this weekend, I'll re-run the test and see if it makes a difference.

Finally booted my pc

Raid 0 @ 500gb gets 66.1 mb/s burst and around 50 sequential read.. ill post screen in a sec.. the card bites.. 🙂

My Tach

That little blue spec is the iram boot drive.. 🙂
