I have slow down performance when playing Counter STrike. Im using a Built by ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb card. I play on this T1 server which supports 32 players. And the server is always full. My framrate dropped from 75 (max for me using V-sync) to around 60 or lower when I see lots of people on the screen. Im not sure if this is the card 's problem or that's how it suppose to be, anyone experienced this? or any suggestions?

Make sure you don't have truform on. IIRC, the console commands are ati_subdiv and ati_npatch. Type those two in, and if they return a number other than zero, add a "= 0" to each command to correct that. Truform will affect any card other than an 8500/9100 more simply because those cards don't have dedicated Truform hardware.

Ok, I just set those commands to 0 each. But why do I have to set that manually in Counter STrike?
I didn't have Trueform on in the OpenGL setting, not even in the Direct3D setting, I set it to always off.
But like you said, when I go to CS's console and typed ati_subdiv and ati_npatch, I saw one is 2.1 and other is 1 respectively. So changing in the display setting doesn't affect?

IIRC = If I Reember Correctly

To enter those commands, just type:

~ati_subdiv 0
ENTER
ati_patch 0
ENTER

And see if your fps tanks next time you see a lot of ppl onscreen.

Yep, I did, but I thought you just left the settings as they were, as you didn't mention whether turning them off solved your fps problem. Did it?

As for why they're on, I'm not sure. It could be a CS/HL issue (they detect your card and improperly enable those settings), or maybe you had CS installed before you installed your 9800, and it just kept those settings. In fact, I'm not even exactly sure of what those settings I listed do, so you should probably Google for more info if you want to know why they're set the way they are. I do know that upgrading to CS 1.3 from the previous version made performance tank with my Rage 128 on a P3-866 (it was slow enough already, but we're talking tanking into single-digits). I finally figured out CS somehow had those settings (TruForm) enabled on my decidedly non-TruForm card, and disabling them fixed the massive framerate dips with multiple ppl onscreen. So I'm leaning toward it being a CS issue, in that it improperly detects ATi cards, or unintelligently enables (or doesn't disable) certain settings. But CS is free, so I'm not really complaining. ;)

Out of curiosity, have you tried playing the game with vsync disabled? It should boost your scores dramatically, though it might result in some "tearing" of the onscreen image. I'd try it out, and leave it off if you don't see any visual problems.
